Owen Matthews is a historian and journalist who has spent 27 years living in and writing about Russia, Ukraine and the former Soviet Union. He was Moscow Bureau Chief for Newsweek magazine and is the author of nine Russia-related books which have been translated into 32 languages and shortlisted for several major prizes, including The Guardian First Books Award, the Orwell Prize and France’s Prix Medicis. His latest book, Overreach: the Inside Story of Putin’s war on Ukraine, has been described by the Telegraph as 'the Ukraine war book you must read'.  Overreach was been shortlisted for the Parliamentary Book of the Year award, and won the Pushkin House Book Prize in 2023.
